Caution: What Not to Eat During Pregnancy

By Sam Kappel

When it comes to being pregnant, eating healthy and knowing what not to eat during pregnancy is important. Eating the right foods is a good step for a healthy baby.

Fish with mercury has been studied to lead to development issues for the baby. Canned tuna has a small amount of mercury and is advised to eat in moderation. Fish like swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish are some examples.

Deli meat had been tied to listeria contamination which can lead to miscarriage. If you do eat deli meat it is recommended to reheat it to kill bacteria.

Raw meats such as uncooked red meat, poultry and sea food should be avoided due to possible salmonella poisoning and other bacteria problems.

Raw shellfish is dangerous because of the seafood-borne illness that these foods may cause. It is recommended to stay away from oysters, mussels and clams.

Raw eggs and foods that contain raw eggs should be avoided when pregnant. Like many of the other foods that should be avoided, they harbor possible bacteria that can be dangerous to the baby's health.

Cheese that is made with unpasteurized milk can harbor bacteria and listeria. Look on labels for cheese that is pasteurized to eat. Cheese dips are a good example of soft cheese to stay away from.

Meat spreads and Pate have been studied to have the possibility to contain bacteria like listeria.

Vegetables that are unwashed need to be washed correctly to help avoid bacteria contamination. Eating vegetables is very important to a healthy diet during pregnancy, but can hold bacteria if not washed correctly.

Another food that can possibly attract bacteria and listeria is smoked sea food. Examples are smoked salmon, cod, tuna, whitefish and trout.

Caffeine consumption can be dangerous while pregnant. Studies show to keep daily consumption under 200 mgs.

Alcohol is one of the most obvious things to stay away from when you are expecting. Alcohol can cause birth defects and development issues in children.

Stay away from foods that have been sitting out. For example if you go out for dinner and take food home, make sure you refrigerate it before sitting out two hours. Pot lucks are also an example of foods that may be sitting out long enough to start harboring bacteria.

Eating the right foods and having structure to your diet is important for a healthy pregnancy. Finding what not to eat during pregnancy is important for a healthy baby.
