Fire Safety Tips for Your Home

By Mark Mahaffey

It is not uncommon to hear a news story about people dying in house fires. These sorts of stories strike fear in many people, because they know it can happen to anyone.

However, you do not have to sit back in fear, simply hoping that it does not happen to you. You can take action to do everything possible to keep you and your family safe from the tragedy of a house fire. Safety includes not only prevention, but also a fire system that alerts you in case a fire does break out in your home.

First, consider prevention. Do you have fire hazards in your home? You may without even realizing it. Old wiring is one hidden danger. If you live in an older house, the wiring may be very old and dangerous. It is not uncommon for bad wiring to cause a house fire. It is a good idea to have it professionally checked. The wiring can be replaced if it is found to be a fire hazard.

Appliances are another risk factor for home fires. Be sure to never leave your stove unattended. Also, if you use an iron on your clothes, buy the kind that shuts off automatically. There are few things scarier than being away from home and not remembering whether or not you turned the iron off!

But even though you may be diligent about preventing fire, sometimes they happen anyway. That is why your fire protection needs to include smoke detectors. Time is your best friend in the case of a house fire. The sooner you can get out, the better your chances of survival. That is why a sensitive smoke detector is so crucial: it can alert you to the presence of fire and smoke.

Choose a fire detector system that is both ionic and photoelectric. This means that the system will alert you to both slow, smoldering fires and more intense blazing fires. The sooner you know about a fire in your home, the sooner you can get out.
