Emergency supplies are something one should always keep on hand. It is always better to be prepared before hand for any potential emergency. Keeping supplies on hand at all times will ensure that you are ready should a natural disaster such as a hurricane, earthquake, or tornado strike. In some cases, you may have some warning, such as with a hurricane. Others, such as earthquakes and tornadoes usually do not allow you time to prepare an emergency kit ahead of time. It is very important to always be prepared.
The list of such supplies includes basic needs like water and food. There should be enough water for each person for drinking and sanitation purposes. One gallon per day per person is a good plan. Food should be nonperishable goods, like peanut butter, canned food, dehydrated items, dried fruit and boxed items like granola bars, trail mix and crackers. These are high energy foods as well. You do not want food that requires a lot of water to prepare. Hard candy is helpful in that it quenches thirst and thus can save drinking water. During the year, check on the stuff in your fit to make sure it is fresh. Look at the expiration dates and replace things as needed. Change out canned goods every year.
A first aid kit is a smart thing to out into the emergency supply kit. Things like bandages, antibiotic ointment and cream, a thermometer, eye washing solution and sterilized towelettes can go in here. Also make sure there is a 7 day supply of any prescriptions and medical supplies that anyone might need. This may include blood sugar and blood pressure monitoring equipment. Other non prescription medicines could be included as well. Stuff like pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medicine, antacids and laxatives are a good idea. If anyone is or may be susceptible to a heart attack, include aspirin.
Other stuff to have are disposable eating utensils, candles and waterproof matches (in a waterproof container), a fire extinguisher and a radio that is either hand cranked or operates on batteries. Also remember to put inside personal hygiene items that people may need such as feminine products, baby diapers and other specific needs things that you can think of.
In most cases, emergencies hit with no advanced warning. We cannot always predict when something bad will happen. The best we can do is to take steps to be prepared for if and when that day does come. By being prepared for the worst case scenario, you will be more ready to deal with any problems and take care of yourself and your family. They are all depending on you.
