Tim Thayne, who has a doctorate in psychology and is a licensed marriage family therapist, spoke about his organization, Homeward Bound, with Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio. They discussed the idea about home as a safe haven in troubled times when family members experienced a crisis.
Background On Tim Thayne and Homeward Bound
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Homeward Bound, Tim Thayne received
his doctorate from Virginia Tech. He has used his extensive counseling experience in helping family members and company employees solve the problems that stopped them from enjoying harmonious relationships. Prior to this type of work, he founded and ran Therapeutic Expeditions, an immensely successful Wilderness therapy education program.
Homeward Bound was created to fill the gap between out-of-home treatment programs and the realities of home life or independent living. Participating families have benefited from the practical and customized education, coaching, and real-time support they receive at the hands of Homeward Bound's experienced Transition Coaches.
Homeward Bound: Appreciating Home
During the interview, Dr Thayne shared some of his own experiences growing up in a close family where members looked out for each other. Consequently, as a therapist, he has concentrated his attention on healing the relationships in a home. Parents and their children alike experienced profound personal development through his program.
As an analogy, he discussed how pets like dogs and cats found security in having a peaceful area to go where they might feel at home. People, too, shared this natural desire to have a safe haven when life became overwhelmingly challenging.
Dr. Thayne explained that when family member's bonds are tight, catastrophe and adverse situations brings everybody together to overcome it, but when the household bonds are weak and unsteady, a dilemma or tragedy pulls them apart, with each member then looking elsewhere for a home. It was the hardest thing for parents to actually send their youngsters to a therapeutic boarding school to help the kid reintegrate back into the family once again.
In closing, Dr Thayer suggested that what parents needed to do to create a real home was to honor the recovery power of love, intentionally create a loving home, and establish family traditions.
Summary
Home is where we establish our most important partnerships and relationships. It is a sacred place where households share experiences, customs and values. For parents to produce a home they must be open to unplanned, spontaneous family experiences. The homeward bound experience could be defined as feeling at home due to the supportive family atmosphere.
