Baby Shower Gift Ideas - A Dad's Perspective

By Ethan West

I realize what you're thinking. What on earth does a dad have to say about baby showers? Most men look at a room teeming with women opening baby gifts just like they would a hospital ward treating people infected with the bird flu. Get me as far away from there as possible!I must admit that I've only ever been dragged to a couple of co-ed showers. The men decided to avoid the festivities and hide out in the basement where we watched football and ate the snacks that the ladies barely touched.

Now here's the crazy part. I actually LOVE baby showers. Allow me to explain. In my pre-parent days, I used to spend my evenings obsessively researching anything that I was considering buying. For three hours every night (and I mean EVERY night), I would read reviews on cameras, electronics, cars etc as a form of entertainment. Each purchase my wife and I made was thoroughly researched and had to universally have outstanding reviews. This made the buying process extremely slow and painful for my wife. At a glacier's pace, we started to accumulate some super cool stuff that most people either hadn't seen, or had seen but didn't know enough about it to make a buying decision. I started getting phone calls on a regular basis from friends and family asking what products I would recommend for them. This gave me more excuses to research products, and in the process, help my loved ones in the process.

Jump forward five years to my wife's announcement that we were having a baby. We realized that we'd need to get some things for our future baby. The only problem was that we had no idea what babies needed, not to mention whether or not they were any good. I'd prepared for this.

I began researching without abandon to the find the best, safest, most practical, top rated products for the baby. I loved this process and it became somewhat of a hobby for me. My wife and I gradually got the reputation for having all the best baby stuff. Eventually, complete strangers began asking me what we would suggest for their babies or to give as gifts. Word was getting out that I was a baby gear geek and I desperately hoped none of my buddies found out. It gave me great satisfaction to help these people figure out what to buy for their loved ones.

My passion to help others combined with a bizarre baby product knowledge has led me to actually like baby showers. Don't misunderstand me. I would much prefer sticking a fork in my eye than go to another baby shower. They simply give me the chance to help gift buyers choose great products that improve parents' and babies' lives. I want parents and babies to love, and actually use, the gifts they receive at their baby shower.
