6 Appropriate Musical Instruments for Children

By Ruth Williams

We all know that fuelling our child's creativity is essential. However, it can be a difficult task to get them to take up a musical instrument when there is the television and computer games to contend with. However, if your little ones do get bitten by the music bug, what are the most suitable instruments for them to pick up and play?

In most cases, children will be introduced to music at school and given the chance to play a musical instrument. But if you want to further encourage your child, here we look into the most appropriate instruments for your child to play:

1. Violin

This is a fun and novel instrument to learn to play and is popular at schools. This musical instrument is perfect as it comes in many different sizes. As well as being available in a range of sizes they are also easy for the child to transport around.

2. Percussion Instruments / Drums

There's a great variety of drums and percussion instruments available, so a large drum kit isn't necessarily the only option. Drums are great for creating rhythm and a range of different sounds and kids seem to love them. If you don't have the room for a full kit, you can buy individual and hand-held drums. This also means the outlay is less.

3. The Piano

Learning how to play the piano is a good introduction to learning music. The piano can be played as a solo or as part of a group or band so it is a very useful instrument to be able to play. If you don't have the funds or space for a piano there is an alternative. A keyboard with weighted keys will work just as well. When you know whether your child is going to enjoy playing, you can assess whether you want to invest in a piano.

4. The Guitar

The guitar, both acoustic and electric, has been used by many pop stars which has led to an increase in people wanting to learn to play it. This is not necessarily the easiest musical instrument to learn to play and will require a great deal of dedication. Start your little ones off with an acoustic version, before rocking out with an electric.

5. Flute

The flute is a great woodwind instrument and a popular choice for school lessons. It is small and easy to carry around, and requires little care and maintenance. As with the guitar, mastering the technique of playing the flute can be a challenge. Despite this, it is a convenient choice and a great option for many young beginners.

6. Learn the Trumpet

The trumpet is a bold instrument to play and ideal for those children who don't mind standing out. You'd be mistaken for thinking that the trumpet is only used in orchestras, as it is also widely used in modern day songs. This instrument requires a good lung capacity and the strength to blow it and get a note, so it is probably best for slightly older children.

Encouraging your little ones to play a musical instrument is a great way to help them grow. It helps them develop mentally as well as learning to be responsible, committed and to persevere when things get tough. They learn to value their own belongings, and will really grow in self-esteem. So what are you waiting for? Check out children's musical instruments which are available to hire or buy.
