Pre-planning 101-What You Need To Know

By Jameson Littman

As someone who constantly thinks ahead, you've probably already thought about your personal future and what will happen to your family when your time is up. But most people probably don't give it much thought until the time comes when they are very sick or when their children are grown. Regardless of where you currently are in life, some simple steps will help you plan ahead to give you and your family comfort in the future.

Looking ahead to the future involves a number of factors. Most of us strive to do well in high school so that we can get accepted into college. If we try to eat a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis, we can expect to get toned up and lose a little weight in the future. In order to have the best possible outcomes later in life, you have to make smart choices in advance.

Have you considered what would happen to you if you became gravely ill and were unable to make your own decisions? If you ever saw some of the haunting images of a person that has been on life support for an extended period, it might encourage you to make a plan so that such a fate will never be in your future. These are the types of life decisions that would need to be discussed with someone beforehand; otherwise they would have no possible way of knowing what you want.

That is the motivation behind naming a health surrogate and putting together a living will. Just as you need to have health insurance coverage, before you must see a doctor, having these taken care of is just a part of pre-planning in life. By thinking ahead in this way you can make thoughtful decisions about serious choices. It gives you the ability to be absolutely certain that what you want to happen in certain circumstances will be honored.

By doing just a few simple things in advance, you can help your family avoid the future stress that would arise if you hadn't laid out your plans beforehand. Many people understandably feel uncomfortable when they have to talk about their own mortality. But it is just another step you can take to protect your family members. It is a security method much like having car insurance for your vehicle will keep you protected. People don't assume that they will get into a car accident, but if it happens, your car will be protected and will have some peace of mind.
