5 Techniques to Help Kids Stay Healthy

By Sandee Roman

A survey among teachers states that it's a challenge for teachers to keep the students clean and healthy. When the students come to school feeling ill, the teachers already see this as a normal situation. Only about 30 percent said their schools' custodial staff disinfects the classrooms routinely. "Germs are frequently spread through surface contact yet many teachers don't have the time or the tools to combat these germs," said Dr. Paul S. Horowitz, medical director of the Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital pediatric and adolescent clinics in Portland, Ore. This cleanliness issue is a major factor that affects the health and wellness of the students and also the teachers.

Statistics states that greater than 70% of teachers experienced getting sick because of catching the virus from their students who come to school ill. This survey that is involved with children's health in the school was the result of a study done by a children's Publisher Scholastic and was the topic in a PTA meeting. School nurses also advise that healthy lifestyle that starts in the homes should be continued in the schools. This is necessary for illness prevention among the students and teachers. The health habits that many children practice in the homes and outside the schools greatly affects their health condition in the schools. Doctors provide the following tips for parents:

* Hand washing for 10 - 15 seconds is the most effective method for disease prevention. This activity should be encouraged among all children.

* Don't allow your children to share utensils. Whilst learning to share is important, this shouldn't apply to cups, glasses or eating utensils.

* Make sure your children get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation stresses the immune system. Most children need at least eight hours of sleep per night.

* Allow for a full recovery. You should not send your kids to school when they are sick.

* It's also a great advantage to make sure that your child has gotten all the important vaccines and continue with the yearly boosters. Meningitis is a dangerous illness that can be prevented with proper immunization.. Make sure that your children are properly immunized to stay healthy and protect other students from illness as well.
