Almost everybody understands that babies are sweet and cuddly. They get to wear super cute and goofy looking clothes. There are so many things babies can wear that adults would be mocked mercilessly for wearing. Some think that being a baby is super simple. You might be surprised to learn that most people think that babies are already mostly adult except for a few developmental flaws like an inability to speak and a lack of teeth. The truth is that babies are complex little creatures with their own sets of needs and abilities. Here are some things about babies that you might not have known already.
A baby's skull is not fused together when it is born. This is just one of the things that makes a newborn so fragile to hold. Serious damage could be done to your child's development if you are not careful when handling his or her head-be careful of that soft spot! After about three months or so, the plates start to come together and fuse and the soft spot isn't as sensitive. You do still need to be careful though because it can take up to eighteen months for the frontal parts of the skull to calcify and harden.
This is why a baby will sometimes choose one toy instead of another. It is kind of a cruel joke that the decorations most parents find hideous because of their garish color schemes are actually the decorations (and toys) that are best for their children's eyesight and brain development!
The vocal range of babies is very impressive; even if it does take them a while to use those vocal cords to make words that adults can understand. This is due to the fact that a baby's larynx won't be finished developing until long after the baby has been born. This is one of the reasons that babies can make more sounds than adults. Pay attention to your baby's sounds: it won't take long for him to assign specific sounds to specific needs or things. This is the way babies teach their parents how to get them what they want-as long as the parents are paying attention they can usually figure it out within a moment or two. A baby's first word is usually one that he can make using the consonants made by the front of his mouth and a couple of vowel sounds. Babies will usually say "dada" before "mama" because "dada" uses the front of the mouth and is easier for the baby to learn to say-and it's first utterance is almost always an accident!
While most doctors recommend against consuming mercury while a woman is pregnant, eating non mercury forms of fish can be quite healthy. Eating salmon while you are pregnant is good because salmon is chock full of healthy nutrients for you and your baby and it does not contain mercury the way other types of fish do. It is believed that eating fish both improves the brain function of a fetus and sets them up for superior communication skills later in life and that women who do not eat fish will not be able to pass these things along to their children. Of course this has yet to be scientifically proven so, if you do not particularly like salmon, don't lose sleep over this.
