If you have young children you may have noticed at some point that they are like parrots. They repeat almost everything that you say, the good and bad as well a mimics what you do. We must remember to be mindful of our good behavior.
This makes me think of my 6 year old niece. She is so sweet, like a little angel give or take a tantrum now here and there.
Lately the child had been using bad words, not just bad words but actually using profanity. For 3 straight days she repeated the same phase when greeting her teacher at school. It was if this happened over night, out of no where she appeared to have mastered profanity.
Every one wondered why she would say such bad things to the teacher.
Dad and Mom swore that they did not use that kind of language, especially if their child was present. Her teacher of course did not believe that she was getting it from school. The parents sat down with her and explained that she should never use profanity and why.
They went on a quest to find out where she learned such things. They were sure she understood what she did was wrong and lectured her without any scolding or punishment.
Off to school she went the next day, upon greeting her teacher she said those same bad words. The teacher once again called the parents stating that the child had said the bad words again.
Clearly she was displaying defiant behavior. After school let out the child went home and her parents again talked to her. Apparently the child did not take them seriously; as a matter fact she thought it was a joke, laughing during the conversation. This time she was punished. No toys or television were permitted.
The following morning the child went to school and said the same phrase to the teacher. The parents were contacted by the teacher and told them that if this continued the child would be ejected from school. The parents were feeling defeated, they had tried talking and punishment with the child, now what?
They thought that perhaps a spanking would help. The child was lectured and spanked, they told her not to say bad words to the teacher ever.
Well the next day the child greeted the teacher in a proper manner upon entering the classroom. This positive change made everyone happy. The child has not used any bad language since the spanking.
Did the spanking work? Maybe, but was this the only way to handle the situation, after all the parents did not want their child expelled from school.
