Greeting cards are one of the simplest yet most meaningful ways to communicate appreciation, respect and, of course, well wishes. They are much more personal than an email and more lasting than a phone call. Greeting cards become treasured reminders of relationships, interactions and special moments between the student and his or family and the individual teacher.
Any way that you can build a positive interaction with your child's school and his or her teacher will, believe it or not, improve your child's academic performance. By having your child send a greeting card to his or her teacher, you will be showing the teacher that you really care that they care for your child. This will reinforce good vibes between the teacher and the child.
The positive effect of motivational messages in school settings is the subject of a study in the January 2008 issue of the British Journal of Educational Technology. While this study focused in on teachers providing direct, written, motivational messages to students the results can easily be extrapolated to other interactions.
When individual motivational messages are received by students, they do better overall at school. They have more confidence and get better results. Equally, when a teacher is shown consideration and appreciation, especially when this is communicated in writing, the overall quality of the educational experience will improve.
The success of the educational system is based around trust between the student, the family and the school. However, US research reported in 2000, in the Journal of School Psychology, that trust between parents and schools declined as students moved through the system from Elementary School to High School.
There is a need for everyone to act to improve the relationship between families and schools. Trust can be build by sending positive messages to teachers, just as trust is built in the other direction. The study showed that increasing trust through communication will improve the overall quality of interactions between children and teachers.
In situations where the teacher only sees parents when there is a problem it is difficult to develop a strong, positive, working relationship. The research is clear that several factors of the parent-teacher relationship contribute to the educational performance of the student. Of these, the quality of parent-teacher interactions and the frequency of these interactions are described as critical predictors of positive student outcomes. Researchers were able to determine these indicators in a longitudinal study published in 1999 in the American Journal Of Community Psychology.
Sending a random greeting card to show appreciation for a teacher is a far more significant act than emailing, phoning or saying thanks in passing. It will also give your child an advantage. It will be an additional communication and will help nurture a positive relationship with the teacher. This will to a more effective educational experience for your child. It may even result in a better academic outcome.
