The old command and control military model of parenting as well as the laissez-faire or 'hands off' approach to parenting have serious limitations when applied in the parent teenager relationship. Both of these traditional approaches to parenting often end up with destructive consequences. Instead, following the lead taken in sport and business circles, a life coaching approach to parenting has proven advantages.
About five years ago when I began using a life coaching approach to the way I parent our teenagers, my wife and I have witnessed at least seven positive developments in our children. These developments I firmly believe have come as a result of improvements in the quality of our parent teenager relationships.
Here are seven benefits that can be achieved through using a coaching approach to parenting your teenager.
1. Teens who are more motivated and have more enthusiasm for life. This shows up in visioning, setting goals and in taking action.
2. Teenagers who are more open and willing to communicate. This is reflected in their willingness to initiate conversations.
3. Teenagers who have been able to take greater control of their emotions. This comes with fewer emotional meltdowns and of lesser intensity and duration.
4. Teenagers who become better problem solvers. Where in the past, they threw their hands up in despair, they now know that solutions are just waiting to be unlocked.
5. Teenagers who are less apt to stressing out when they make a mistake, knowing that mistakes are an important part of their learning curve.
6. Teenagers who are able to find peace within. As a result they are less likely to be involved in arguments, confrontations and more willing to consider the viewpoints of others.
7. Teens who have been able to get more clarity in knowing their identity, what their passions are and their purpose in life.
The chances are that in your current parent teenager relationship you have already unconsciously adopted coach like strategies and are experiencing the powerful benefits of doing so. Or you may still be practicing old school parenting styles and experiencing a lot of pain and frustration.
Irrespective of the nature of your parent teenager relationship, it's good to do a periodical relationship stock take. Determine what is working and keep doing it. Also determine what you are doing that is failing to deliver the results you want and replace it with something else.
I am confident that what will emerge in your parenting tool and skill sets will be coach like practices that will help you build a warm, loving and respectful parent teenager relationship.
