Playpen buying tips

By Mike Ford

There isn't a single parent in the world who can constant hold and keep their baby near themselves at all times. Luckily there is the wildly popular playpen. Playpens offer an sealed off safe play area for your child. Even though your child may be in a playpen you should never leave them alone.

What to look for:

If the playpen has mesh sides, the holes in the mesh should be no larger than inch (0.6 centimeter) to keep small fingers from getting caught. The mesh should be securely attached.

The sides should be at least 20 inches (51 centimeters) high, measured from the floor of the playpen.

If there are wood slats, ensure that the spaces between them are not too large. Although you hardly ever see wooden playpens nowadays.

To keep your baby safe from bumps make sure there is padding on the rails.

Ensure that your baby will not be able to reach locks which lower the sides.

All metal objects such as hinges and supports should be covered to protect your baby.

Look for a playpen with top rails that automatically lock when lifted into the normal position.

If you happen to use a pre-owned playpen, examine the floor of a used playpen for wear and tear.

SAFETY NOTES:

Never leave a baby in a mesh playpen with the side lowered. The baby could get trapped between the mesh side and the floorboard. Because of the danger of suffocation, only one floor pad should be used and soft bedding should be avoided in the playpen at all times.

Show babysitters and other caregivers how to correctly set up the playpen.

Never put your baby to sleep on their stomach. Put them to sleep on their back.

If your child starts to climb out of their playpen it is time to stop using it. Don't risk injury to your baby just get a few more months use out of your playpen.

Hopefully you know have a little more knowledge to help you choose the right playpen.
