How To Find The Best Baby Monitor

By Carla Rigs

Trying to find the best baby monitor for your little one is just like looking for any other infant-related product.

Make sure you're able to adjust the volume on your receiver. While you want the monitoring station to pick up even the tiniest sound of discontent, you want to make sure the receiver has a volume knob that lets you choose an appropriate setting. You'll want to avoid the scenario where it sounds like a jet flying in your house, and it's only because your baby is happily playing with toys. You DO want a system that adequately conveys an alarm without breaking your eardrums.

Assessing how much you want to be able to hear, see or know when you are not in the same room as your baby is also important. Some systems just keep track of the sounds, while others may keep track of any movements in the room by alerting you. There are even systems which have full video and audio monitoring capabilities. Since there are many options available, the only thing you need to be doing is assessing how much you want to be able to hear and see. Keep in mind that the type of system you choose is not a reflection on your parenting abilities, so opting to not purchase a full video surveillance system for your baby's room does not mean that you care less about your child than a parent who would purchase something that expensive.

There are also sites that publish lots of consumer reviews of all kinds of products; the most popular example would be Amazon.com. These reviews are great because they are made by real users who only want to share their experiences, not make a quick buck. On sites like this you have to be ready to read dozens if not hundreds of reviews. For every person who loves a product, there will be someone who hates it. Look for details and specifics that you can use to help compare the user's experience to your own. That will help you figure out if a monitor is good enough for you or if you should choose something else.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when you are choosing which baby monitoring system is right for your home. The bottom line is you should choose on what is best for you, overall. For example, a battery that lasts a long time may be most important.

But, perhaps the ability to keep a visual eye on your child may be the most important concern.
