Baby Monitors - How Do You Know What's Most Important?

By Carla Rigs

Choosing a baby monitor is harder than it used to be, and there used to be only a few models to choose from, which made the process a relatively quick one. Since we have so many technological advances in our world today, we now have so many options available to us to choose from, such as the size, functions, features, and even style! In fact, now there are so many different shapes, sizes, styles, functions, brands, and prices to wrap your head around, and you may be surprised to know that there are monitors which can give you full audio and video surveillance, and some can be wired to your home, and others have multiple receivers. However, before you just run off and buy the first monitor you see on the shelf, take these tips on board to help you choose the right one for your baby and your family!

Word of mouth is always a good place to start; what brands would your friends and family recommend? Just as importantly, are there any particular monitors that someone had to discard for some reason? If you want to find out which baby monitors are a good value, asking people you know can be the best place to start. Another advantage to this is that someone may give you one that they no longer use. This would be the best and simplest way to get the baby monitor you want! Remember that when you ask about monitors, you want to know specifics. If someone just tells you something like, "it worked" you won't really be learning anything.

Assessing how much you want to be able to hear, see or know when you are not in the same room as your baby is also important. Some systems just keep track of the sounds, while others may keep track of any movements in the room by alerting you. Or do you want a system which has full video and audio recording surveillance features, much like the systems you see in stores? But when making your decision, you really only need to ask yourself how much you actually want to be able to monitor when you are not in the room. Remember that if you do not choose the "all out, all gadgets, expensive" system, that does not make you a bad parent, because at the end of the day, you simply need to be finding a system which can monitor your baby as you need it to.

There are other considerations, but these are only several that can help you decide on a monitor that's right for you. In the end, the best and easiest way is to just use what is best for you as a basis for decision. Your situation may dictate a long battery life is really important.

But, perhaps the ability to keep a visual eye on your child may be the most important concern.
