Twin Differences

By Angela Manton

I can see why there's so much fascination around twins and indeed the advantages to be gained from twin studies. I'm blessed with both fraternal twins and identical twins and am able to make my own observations as a twin mum.

My identical twins are definitely 2 peas from the same pod as the expression goes. They look the same, generally have the same likes and dislikes, measure almost the same, basically have the same interests although they are only 4 years old so there's much room for change in that area. Regardless of these apparent similarities and the proven fact that they share identical genes there are still differences and certainly differences in their personalities.

The differences aside from the weight discrepancy were clear from birth. We had one reasonably chilled baby who seemed to feel quite happy with the world and required less physical contact to settle whereas our smallest twin required much more. The larger of our twin girls is naturally more confident particularly in new eventualities and of new people and our smaller twin is more of a cautious person. Nevertheless once smaller twin is comfy in a situation she shines and is the comedian of the family; she's naturally very funny.

I believe it is ultimately the twin personality differences that help us as mums and dads to tell them apart within a glance. We see beyond the surface, we look for facial expressions and mannerisms; we listen carefully to the tones of their voices and observe how they respond to different scenarios. All of these small signs that display their personality and character help us to recognise them separately and as individuals. And, they're individuals but at the same time they're identical twins and both factors have to be taken into consideration when parenting them.

I am not certain if it's the case with all twins or rather identical twins but my 2 are definitely on par with their development and learning. No, they did not begin to walk on precisely the same day or speak their first word at precisely the same moment or anything freakier than that but they are progressing at a very similar rate. We home educate our youngsters so we pay special attention to how they learn and what they wish to do and as stated already while the girls are on par and have the same interests there are still variations in their personalities.
