Infertility and Pregnancy Infertility

By Christina K. Jones

Conceiving a child is not always easy to do. There are lots and lots of women that, on a daily basis, seek advice on how to get pregnant, reporting inability to conceive through large periods of time. The purpose of this article is to analyze some of the factors affecting the chances of successful conception.

Looking into the problem, we can separate it in two primary groups for better understanding. In Group 1, we include the couples that fail to successfully conceive due to own, personal or psychological reasons. Such reasons are anxiety, not knowing which days are mostly fertile etc. In Group 2, we include those couples that indeed have a medical condition that is rather treatable or that are, beyond treatment, infertile.

It's extremely common for couples that can't conceive to start thinking that the one or the other or both are infertile. This is a reaction that comes directly from feeling panic. It isn't true in most cases. The inability to get pregnant can occur due to lots of reasons that have nothing to do with infertility. Nevertheless, a medical problem may exist and it's not right to exclude the possibility. If that be the case, a visit to the doctor is the best path to take in order to conduct a series of respective tests.

No wonder the most commonly found problem in couples that are having a difficulty to conceive is... stress. Stress is more likely to happen as time goes by without a successful conception. The couple should try and relax in any way possible in order to maximize the potential of getting pregnant. Exercising, listening to music or simply taking a walk works wonders. Another important variable of a couple's stress levels is it's family members. They tend to increase the pressure when they know the couple is trying to conceive so it's best if that secret is kept to themselves.

Maintaining a healthy body is important when trying to conceive a child. To that extend, adopting a healthy diet, staying away from junk food and other hazardous habits such as smoking and drinking are all highly recommended. Some couples find it great to exercise at the same time. It certainly helps.

Another important aspect of the process is to know when to try harder to get pregnant. Thus, it is of vital importance for the couple to know when the most fertile days of the month approach. If the woman's cycle is regular, that is easy to calculate. If, for instance the cycle is 28 days long, the most fertile day would be, day 14. In that case, the couple should start intensively trying from day 12 and up to day 16.

In many cases though, the cycle isn't regular and thus, predicting the fertile days is a lot harder. So, it's recommended that the couple buys an OPK (Ovulation Predictor Kit) that's considered to be very accurate in predicting high fertility days. At the same time, trying a home based sperm count test for the male can further assist the parents to be in timing their encounters to mach high fertility periods. As a general principle, staying away from heat sources (such as laptops), increases a male's sperm count.

If the couple keeps trying but even after having followed the above, they still can't conceive after a couple of months; it's advised to visit a doctor for fertility testing. Both should get the exam to figure out what's going on. From that point forward, several medical treatments may apply depending on the situation.
