Pottying For Babies, And Three Ways On How To Teach Them To Do Sign Language

By Leif Sianez

Your pre-verbal infant, or what we all know as toddlers, should be taught baby sign language as it is an excellent tool for communicating.

Babies who have not reached one year old, are already able to recognize simple signs. Communication is possible!

This gives your baby a way to tell you that they need your help in going to the toilet, or the potty. First it will be recognition of the needs or what their body should get, perhaps as they go, moments before or after.

The language between our pre-verbal babies and our verbal culture is what we call sign language. Through this tool, you are able to help them communicate with you. Signs are recognize by babies as soon as they are able because our visual memories are older. Signing can already be picked up around 12 months, but it is also possible to do so earlier or later than that. Look out for any recognition of signs that your baby might be giving out in order to talk to you.

Pick out an appropriate sign or natural gesture. It is important for the sign to be simple, so your baby can crudely imitate it, and always be used with the spoken word and loving eye contact. For you to make it easy for you to sign regularly in your day so that baby sign language and infant pottying are simply integrated and normal parts of your lifestyle, here are three guidelines.

The Three Guidelines to Remember When Combining Infant Pottying With Baby Sign Language:

1.When you approach the potty, do the sign

2. Show the sign to the baby when the baby is on the potty

3. You should use the sign to see if your baby wants to use their potty-respond to their excitement, and respect their reservation

These three strategies will help you add baby sign language to your elimination communication moments effortlessly. Your infant will sometimes show a great awareness and control. Signing clearly and in a timely way will be accomplished with your baby. Being a little person is a busy work, so there will be times that they will not do this. Your practice with baby sign language and of EC will eventually ebb and flow. There will be flashes of amazing communication like any natural process, the reason families get hooked on elimination communication. One should not see it as an expectation that they will be toilet independent at a very early age, and should see it as a wonderful and fleeting sign of the future. EC is not a 'method' or results based activity like conventional potty or toilet training, it is a daily practice and something that is part of your lifestyle.

Parents should really give it a try, because Baby Sign Language and EC are really just great combinations that could help your baby communicate with you and anyone else who would be taking care of them. Because of this method, you will be reducing the number of diapers that you will use, as well as help the environment and save a lot of money, but the best advantage is the bond that you will be sharing with your baby.
